The “SkyScape” retreat, settled it the astonishing roman castle of Roccascalegna in Abruzzo, aims to create an holistic hospitality project, where the night sky can be observed in perfect conditions while spending the nigh in a mountain cabin, a small house or a luxurious villa. The respect for the existing buildings, the landscape and a strong connection with the night sky, were main factors for the project’s development.
SkyScape nigh view
The master plan is divided in three areas of intervention: a Sky Lounge, carefully integrated inside the Fortress; observation cabins and its services, located on the steepest slope below, and the houses, which are spread and integrated on the less inclined area of the site, enjoying privacy and varied views to its surroundings.
SkyScape Cabins and Lounge
The sky lounge’s public program was divided between the existing interior spaces inside the Fort, housing the library, restrooms and part of the info point; and new volumes built in steel and glass, as the main entrance, the restaurant and the observatory center with an auditorium. Using steel structures and dry building techniques it’s possible to avoid excavations and heavy construction on such a delicate site.
The three observatory housing typologies where created with the same principles and structural metric, although each one develops an unique relation and integration with the landscape. The night areas, partially carved on the ground, are introverted during the day, but open up to the sky views trough inclined zenital windows. The central and distribution area is an inner patio, an outdoor space with an organic void allowing the groups to gaze at the “night-space” together. Towards northwest are the social areas with wide windows opened to the landscape. The outdoor terrace create a continuity between internal and external spaces and varies depending on the location. The volumes adapt to the geography and link in a harmonious way the different levels of the ground.
